Carrera 3.0 RS: ’round the Nürburgring with his Röhrlship

by John on July 19, 2010

Sabine Schmitz… Sabine, Sabine. Show me a man who doesn’t dream of Sabine and I’ll show you Graham Norton. Sabine is Nürburgring Girl, brought to our screens by Top Gear. She’s easier on the eye than she is on the Golf in this great bit of Sabine Schmitz video.

I’ll be honest: when I hear the word ‘Nurburgring’, I glaze over just a touch. I know it’s a cathedralofmotorsportblahblahblah, but when someone starts insisting they’re ‘addicted to the ‘Ring’, the grey cells switch off. It’s a reflex action.

Remember when you were young, how those teens who spent all day talking about sex hadn’t the first clue what they were on about? Nurburgring Hero Reports are the same thing.

But, on board with someone who knows the place – like Sabine, and Tim Schrick in the earlier video link – is often quite exciting. On board a classic 911 doing the ‘Ring is even better. On board a rare RS, with his Röhrlship at the wheel? Must be just about the best. That said, few clenches have ever been tighter than the one in the passenger seat at 0:45!

The Carrera 3.0 RS is a car you have to drive: at no point is it thinking for itself. Look at the effort it takes to hold it through the Karussel: proper, 1975, hairy-chested action. Just when you think Walter might be flagging, he starts driving one-handed, before pinning the throttle in top for seconds at a time. It’s great stuff, all the way.

Watch the video. I’ll tell you more about the car tomorrow.
